Most Precious Blood Parish History Overview

  • Holy Rosary Church was established around 1886. Until 1893, various Franciscan priests from Ashland made pastoral visits to Mellen several times a year, celebrating Masses in private homes. Construction of a new church began in 1896, with the first Mass held Sept. 27, 1896
before the church was completed. On Oct. 18, 1897, Bishop James Schwebach of La Crosse made his first visit to Mellen and dedicated the new church. Mass was celebrated once and then twice a month until 1908, when a resident pastor was appointed. In 1913, construction of a new brick church and rectory began. Both were completed by Christmas 1914. The church served parishioners until 1975, when a new church was dedicated — without a bell tower. Eleven years later, thanks to donations from around the country, a new bell tower was erected and dedicated in 1986.

About the dedication of Our Church, Most Precious Blood

  •  Most Precious Blood: The Fountain of Salvation

The devotion to the Most Precious Blood of Jesus Christ is one of the most profound and powerful devotions in the Catholic Church, symbolizing the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus on the cross for the redemption of humanity. The Precious Blood of Christ is a source of grace, mercy, and healing, and it serves as a central theme in the Church’s liturgy and spirituality.

The Biblical Foundation of the Precious Blood

The significance of blood in salvation history is deeply rooted in the Bible, beginning with the Old Testament. In the book of Exodus, we see the importance of the blood of the lamb in the Passover, where the Israelites were instructed to mark their doorposts with the blood of a sacrificial lamb to be spared from the plague of the firstborn. This event prefigures the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus, the Lamb of God, whose blood was shed to save humanity from sin and death.

In the New Testament, the Precious Blood of Christ is highlighted as the means of our redemption. St. Peter writes, “You were redeemed not with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot” (1 Peter 1:18-19). St. Paul also emphasizes this in his letter to the Ephesians: “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace” (Ephesians 1:7).

The shedding of Christ’s blood on the cross is the fulfillment of all the sacrifices of the Old Covenant. It is through His blood that we are cleansed from sin, reconciled with God, and given the hope of eternal life.

The Devotion to the Precious Blood

The devotion to the Most Precious Blood of Jesus has been a cherished tradition in the Church for centuries. It is particularly celebrated during the month of July, which is dedicated to the Precious Blood. This devotion involves meditating on the Passion of Christ, the suffering He endured, and the blood He shed for the salvation of the world.

The Litany of the Most Precious Blood is a popular prayer that reflects on the various aspects of Christ’s sacrificial love, invoking the Precious Blood as a means of protection, purification, and intercession. This litany reminds the faithful of the immense value of Christ’s sacrifice and encourages a deeper appreciation for the Eucharist, where the Blood of Christ is made present.

In the Eucharist, the Church celebrates the sacrifice of Christ in an unbloody manner, but the real presence of His Body and Blood is nonetheless fully present. When the faithful receive the Eucharist, they are receiving the very Blood that was shed on Calvary, a source of life and strength for their spiritual journey.

The Power of the Precious Blood

The Precious Blood of Christ is not only a symbol of sacrifice but also a source of immense spiritual power. Throughout Church history, the Precious Blood has been invoked for protection against evil, healing from illness, and the conversion of sinners. Many saints, including St. Gaspar del Bufalo, who founded the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, were devoted to spreading this powerful devotion.

St. Catherine of Siena, a Doctor of the Church, often spoke of the Precious Blood as the “liquid love” of Christ, poured out to cleanse and sanctify souls. She emphasized that it is through the Precious Blood that we are drawn into a deeper union with God, transformed by His grace, and empowered to live holy lives.

The Precious Blood also plays a central role in the sacrament of reconciliation. In the confessional, the penitent is absolved of their sins by the power of Christ’s blood, which washes away their guilt and restores them to a state of grace. This sacrament is a profound encounter with the mercy of God, made possible by the blood of Jesus.

The Call to Live in the Light of the Precious Blood

As Catholics, the devotion to the Most Precious Blood calls us to a life of gratitude, reverence, and dedication. We are reminded of the infinite love that God has for us, a love that led Him to sacrifice His only Son for our salvation. This devotion invites us to reflect on the price of our redemption and to live our lives in a way that honors the gift we have received.

Living in the light of the Precious Blood means embracing a life of sacrificial love, just as Christ loved us. It calls us to be instruments of reconciliation, peace, and healing in the world, sharing the love and mercy we have received with others. It also encourages us to approach the sacraments, especially the Eucharist and confession, with a deep sense of reverence and appreciation for the grace they convey.

The devotion to the Most Precious Blood is a reminder that, even in our struggles and sufferings, we are never alone. The blood of Christ has the power to heal, to protect, and to sanctify, drawing us closer to the heart of God. It is a source of hope and strength for every Christian, especially in times of trial and temptation.

The Most Precious Blood of Jesus Christ is a central mystery of our faith, representing the boundless love of God and the means of our salvation. Through this devotion, we are invited to contemplate the sacrifice of Christ, to grow in our appreciation for the sacraments, and to live lives of holiness and service.

As we honor the Most Precious Blood, let us renew our commitment to follow Christ, to embrace His cross, and to share His love with the world. In the Precious Blood, we find the fountain of salvation, the wellspring of grace, and the path to eternal life.
